The Royal software house has dubbed  Satya Nadella as CEO, promoted John Thompson to chairman and, in a move that seems to put the “founding father” out to pasture, shifted Bill Gates into a role as technology adviser.

Nadella has  been with the software giant for more than two decades, primarily running its enterprise and cloud businesses.  Nadella, a native of Hyderabad, is notedto be an a well liked team team builder with, more or less, a unanimous vote inside Microsoft for the golden throne.

As opposed to Ballmer, who is well known as a rowdy sports fanatic and pickup game player with hard to control appendages, Nadella is more of a book-wormish type with hobbies consisting of cricket and poetry.

"I've been fortunate to work closely with both Bill and Steve in my different roles at Microsoft, and as I step in as CEO, I've asked Bill to devote additional time to the company, focused on technology and products," Nadella said in an e-mail memo to employees on his first day as CEO.

What this change will mean for the future of Microsoft remains to be seen.  But some of us are on the edge of our seats, with a glimmer of hope for that old beast of a company.
